Why muting words on X still leaves posts in your feed
TL;DR:X matches the literal string you typed, in visible text only — so images, quotes, reposts and misspellings all slip through. Filter by structure (replies, reposts, engagement, country) instead of by a word list.
Why it happens
You mute a word, a phrase or an account, and the same topic keeps showing up: as a quote, as a reply, as text baked into an image, or under a handle you never muted. X matches the literal string you typed, in the visible text only. People then assume the feature is broken — “I muted it and still see it” is one of the most repeated complaints about muting anywhere.
Native X vs x-pro.club
| Native X | x-pro.club |
|---|---|
| Matches only the literal string you typed | Keyword rules read the post text and the image alt text |
| Quotes, reposts and replies slip through | Filter by structure: replies, reposts and quotes fold separately |
| A repost is not covered by muting the original author | Copy-paste swarms are clustered into one row and can be blocked together |
| No explanation for why it still shows up | A “why is this still here” explainer says which rule did not match |
How to do it
- Mute the words you actually see — Open Settings → Privacy and safety → Muted words and add the exact strings, including misspellings. Muting is literal, so “AI” will not hide “A.I.”.
- Turn off replies and quote posts — In the same menu, switch off “Allow replies” and “Allow quote posts” for the accounts you follow. That removes the two biggest sources of unwanted content — and works even when the word list misses.
- Filter by structure instead of keywords — x-pro adds rules a word list cannot express: fold replies only, fold reposts only, hide posts below a like threshold, fold by country and fold copy-paste swarms. Rules scoped to the recommendation feed (仅推荐流) keep your Following timeline untouched.
- Ask why it is still there — With the “why is this still here” option on, hover any post that survived the filter: the extension lists every rule and says which one did not match — missing data, wrong language, no engagement signal.
- Hide one author without unfollowing — Need one account gone? Hiding someone locally does not unfollow them, does not call X’s mute and is reversible — see /docs/en/how-to-mute-someone-without-unfollow for the full recipe.
FAQ
- Why does muting a word on X not work?
- Because muting matches the literal text you typed. Words inside images, quoted posts, reposts from other accounts and misspellings are not matched — so the topic keeps appearing even though the post is gone.
- Can I block a word inside an image?
- Not with X's own muting. x-pro's keyword rules also read the image alt text, so a phrase baked into a picture can be matched and the post folded.
- Does x-pro's hiding follow me on other devices?
- No. x-pro rules stay on this device; it does not call X’s mute and never changes your account settings. Hiding someone locally does not unfollow them, and nobody is notified.
- Mute or block — what is the difference?
- Muting is silent and one-sided: you simply stop seeing them. Blocking is mutual and notifies the other person.
