How to block ads and promoted posts on X from an iPhone (and other ways)

TL;DR:iOS cannot run Chrome extensions, but three routes remain: a Safari content blocker (domain and rule based), a filtering DNS (works device-wide), and moving your bookmarks and alerts elsewhere. Android users can just use the extension.

Why it happens

There is no standard answer to “how to block ads on X” on an iPhone: desktop extensions do not run, and system-wide ad blockers break other apps. Most advice is “switch clients”, which helps nobody — three workable routes exist.

How to do it

  1. iOS: a Safari content blocker — Install a rule-based blocker that ships as a Safari extension, put the promoted domains and tracking parameters in its rules, then allow it for x.com under Settings → Safari → Extensions. It works by domain and path, so other apps are unaffected.
  2. iOS: a filtering DNS (device-wide) — Use a DNS service with filtering lists to block ad and tracking domains at the network level. It covers every app; the trade-off is occasional false positives and having to change the setting when you switch networks.
  3. iOS: move what matters into the browser — Save the posts you care about in Safari or a read-later app, let the blocker handle the noise, and open the mobile web version when you want to review — bookmarks and snapshots keep working there.
  4. Android and desktop: just use the extension — On Android (in browsers that support extensions) and on desktop, use x-pro directly: turn on “fold promoted items” so promoted posts collapse into a restorable notice, and pair it with a rule that folds only promotions.

FAQ

How do I block ads on X from an iPhone?
Three routes: a Safari content blocker (domain/path based, the most controllable), a filtering DNS (device-wide, occasional false positives), or keeping what matters in Safari plus the mobile web. Chrome extensions do not run on iOS.
Can I use the x-pro extension on iOS?
Not directly: iOS does not support Chrome extensions. The parts of it that matter — bookmarks, snapshots and the rule ideas — are available in the mobile web version.
Does a filtering DNS affect other apps?
Yes. A filtering DNS is device-wide, so false positives can break other apps. If that bothers you, use a Safari content blocker, which only affects the browser.
Why does X's “reduce promoted” not do enough?
It is X's own recommendation-side switch and only affects the parts X agrees to demote; promoted posts and ad-like content still appear. To filter per item you need the rule layer.
