How to hide someone's posts on X without unfollowing them
TL;DR:x-pro can hide one account locally, on this device, without unfollowing and without X's mute: no notification for the other person, one click to undo, and an optional expiry (24 hours, 7 days, 30 days) so it is not permanent by accident.
Why it happens
Unfollowing is loud: the other person can notice, and you may regret it. X's own mute is quiet but buried deep in the settings, and it cannot expire — “mute for a week” is not a thing. People keep unfollowing by accident because they assume the two behave the same.
Native X vs x-pro.club
| Native X | x-pro.club |
|---|---|
| Muting hides deep in settings and cannot expire | Hide an author locally, optionally expiring after 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days |
| You can still meet them in recommendations | An “unfollowed” badge marks strangers in the recommendation feed |
| Unmuting means finding settings again | One click on the notice to restore a folded post |
How to do it
- Add an author rule (local, reversible) — In the extension: 内容过滤 → 新增规则 → 规则类型「作者」→ enter the handle → add the rule. The author rule does not unfollow them and does not call X’s mute; it only hides their posts on this device.
- Or use the “屏蔽” button on a community tag — Next to a negative community tag there is a “屏蔽” button. It writes the same local author rule — one click, no settings hunting.
- Set an expiry so it is not permanent by accident — Rules can expire on their own: choose 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days and the author rule stops applying after that, with the original posts coming back. Undo early with “恢复显示” on any folded post.
- Understand what the other person sees — Nothing. A local hide never notifies anyone, never changes your X settings, and does not appear in their “unfollowed you” view. If you want the same effect everywhere, mute them in X too — see /docs/en/why-x-mute-not-working for why muting alone often feels broken.
FAQ
- Does the person know I hid them?
- No. A local hide is silent: no notification, no change to your X settings and no entry in their “unfollowed you” view.
- Can I hide someone for a limited time?
- Yes. Give the author rule an expiry of 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days; the rule stops applying afterwards and their posts come back on their own.
- Does hiding someone locally also hide their replies?
- Yes — the author rule matches every post from that handle, including replies and quote posts, as long as the reply is visible in the timeline you are looking at.
- How is this different from X's own mute?
- X's mute is account-wide and permanent until you undo it; x-pro's author rule stays on this device, can expire after 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, and can be undone with one click from the notice on any folded post.
